As the popularity of Rudraksha beads grows, so does the unfortunate presence of counterfeit beads in the market. Some fake beads are made of wood, plastic, or even cleverly carved berries. Wearing a fake bead will not bring you the spiritual or physical benefits described in the scriptures.
The Water Test (Sinking Test) is a commonly known method, but it is not entirely foolproof. While a good quality, ripe, original Rudraksha will sink in water, a fake bead made of dense wood might also sink. Similarly, an original bead that is dry or unripe might float.
The most reliable way to test authenticity is through a visual and structural inspection. A genuine Rudraksha has deep, natural clefts (Mukhis) that run from the head to the tail. If you look closely, these lines are not uniform or perfectly straight—nature is beautifully imperfect. Counterfeit beads often have lines that look too perfect, as if carved by a machine.
Furthermore, when an original bead is boiled in water for several hours, it will not lose its shape, nor will the lines dissolve (which happens with glued fakes).
